Description: a wine bar and restaurant with a menu of rustic food, including handcrafted charcuterie, inspired by the wine-growing regions of Southern France, Italy, Portugal and the coast of Spain. In addition to cuisine that reflects the aromas, flavors and colors of the Mediterranean, the wine bar features a moderately priced wine list that focuses on boutique vineyards throughout southwestern Europe.

"Wonderful Spot!"

Overview:

I visited Avec on a Sunday evening and found a lively, fun atmosphere. The menu, while not monstrous, was filled with too many things I wanted to try! Everything was delicious there - and I also recommend something nice from their really well priced wine list!

The atmosphere is great - really lively - and also interesting...if you are sitting at the end of a communal bench table, you may be asked to move to seat others (I found it charming!).

Defintely a great spot - but if you are in a hurry to dine, don't visit here as there are no reservations and you may have to wait.

Oh - and visit with a group so that it's easier to try more food!

"Underrated Soundtrack"

October 4, 2011

  • Communal Seating
  • Great Music
  • Bacon Wrapped Dates

  • Food: New American, Seasonal
  • Decor: Communal Seating, Wood
  • Service: Great
  • Cost: $$$
  • Wine / Cocktails: Excellent Beer and Wine list

Overview:

When someone talks about what they would eat as their final meal on earth, they typically include dishes from several different sources/times.

I would have to put the bacon wrapped dates on my final meal menu. Spicy and satisfying, they remain on a menu that changes seasonally.

The focaccia and pork shoulder are also must gets. There is always a good salad or two but make sure you ask your server to guide you to the best one (they are honest).

The wine list is also unorthodox so ask for guidance there as well.

And lastly, they play some great jams if you can sit close enough to the 'kitchen' area.

Bacon Wrapped Dates, Pork Shoulder, Focaccia

"Great late night spot"

March 27, 2011

  • Food: Great small plates
  • Decor: Cozy and communal
  • Service: Great
  • Cost: $$$
  • Wine / Cocktails: Great

Overview:

This place has fantastic food and a fun atmosphere, which means that the wait is often very long for a table in their small, communal space during normal dinner-rush hours. The secret to Avec is to go late, as they are open until midnight on weekdays and until 1:00am on Fridays and Saturdays. The crowd thins out, but the food and service don't miss a beat. I love taking people here from out of town, there are lots of great dishes to share! Highly recommended, definitely one of my favorites!

Recommended Dishes:

la quercia prosciutto with grapefruit and orange salad, chorizo-stuffed medjool dates with smoked bacon and piquillo pepper-tomato sauce

"It's back!"

December 1, 2010

  • Food: Big flavors, amazing use of fresh herbs, casual and approachable but sophisticated.
  • Decor: Casual, bustling, friendly
  • Service: Friendly, efficient, most of the servers have been here for years and remember you.
  • Cost: $$$
  • Wine / Cocktails: Entirely non-us, great representation of global wines, many offered by the quartino

Overview:

My first visit back to Avec since it re-opened and it is better than ever. All of the familiar friendly faces are back and happy to be serving again. We saddled up to a couple bar seats and ordered way too much food. The menu adds new items with some past favorites. Highlights include: the apple/manchego salad with marcona almonds(a past menu item), burgundy snail agridolce with fennel, cabbage, chanterelles and bacon breadcrumbs, and thanks to their new grill - marinated wagyu coulotte with roasted shallots and brussels sprouts salsa verde (my favorite of the evening). Chef Koren was working the room and seemed pleased to be back, I know I am pleased she's back!!

Overview:

If the trout is on the menu (appetizer special last time), be sure to order it. The trout was so good I still talk about it. Deluxe Focaccia is filling but one of my favorites. They don't take reservations.

Recommended Dishes:

Trout, Deluxe, Focaccia, really anything on the menu!
