Description: From Carriage House's website:
From its origins as a tack room to its contemporary incarnation as a hospitable retreat, the Lowcountry carriage house has evolved from its rustic roots to offer genteel repose-much like Southern culinary culture itself. Our modern carriage house beckons with both intriguing history and fresh inspiration, enfolding visitors in a simpler way of life where a small plate of shrimp and a nip of bourbon are the evening’s star attractions. Find this culinary excursion in chef Mark Steuer’s menu at Chicago’s own Carriage House, bringing “down south” up north.

Overview:

I'm an Atlanta girl, and was never a fan of heavy southern food, but this place takes the best of the South and makes it sing. And I'm so happy another stellar place has opened up right on Division!

After much anticipation, we went in ready to eat and were not disappointed. We started with cocktails; the Creole Cocktail is my personal favorite, if you're a bourbon/whiskey lover this is a good one! The cocktail list is great though, as is the wine list, and everything we tried was delish. You will, no doubt, find a cocktail you love here, no matter what your poison.

We decided to start our meal with the Cornbread (yum), Fried Green Tomatoes, Shrimp & Grits, and She-crab Soup. The shrimp were huge, and I could have had a bowl of grits by itself and been happy; this was a fantastic dish. The She-crab soup was amazing as well, and it was a perfect dish for a cold night!

We then moved on to the Carolina Gold Rice Balls, which are pimiento cheese and sweet potato with a pork neck gravy, and are also scrumptious. We also had the Lowcountry Oyster Roast; oysters with cheek bacon, leeks, tomato jam....what could be wrong with that?!

For our mains (we found room, somehow), we had the ribeye, which had a great smoky aftertaste that was fantastic. We also had the pork shoulder with grits, which my pork shoulder-loving boyfriend (who gets it at every restaurant it's available in, and works at a place where they have a good pork shoulder) said was the best he's ever had.

Desert, ah desert. Mine included Templeton Rye, how could it not? But it also included a praline ice cream and short bread dish that blew my mind (ice cream provided by Mindy Segal of Hot Chocolate!), and also a pear cobbler which was the embodiment of comfort food.

I can't sing the praises of Carriage House enough. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere sophisticated and airy, yet lovely and relaxed, the service impeccable...it's really a great place. Props to the whole Carriage House team!
