"Past, present, and future"

May 22, 2011

  • Food: Seafood
  • Decor: Fish shack feel with bar seating
  • Service: Great
  • Cost: $$
  • Wine / Cocktails: Craft beer

Overview:

Fish Bar by Michael Kornick and David Morton is a great addition to the area! The food, the beer, the vibe, the decor, the music, the service - all of it was great. I loved the lobster roll and the desserts are made by Mindy Segal from Hot Chocolate!

Fish Bar got me thinking about a great trip I took to Key West years ago, as well as my upcoming trip to Cape Cod. If a restaurant can bring up memories of a long ago great vacation and make me look forward to another one - that is definitely an added bonus. Thanks for that MK and David Morton!

Overview:

Here's a big gold star for David Morton and Michael Kornick. These two have raised the bar on delicious regional classics served in a casual neighborhood setting (see also: DMK Burger Bar next door). The price is right and the lobster roll is even... righter. We would expect to have to a heart attack over the bill for fish this fresh and good; instead we nearly had one when we ate the salmon carpaccio, it was that amazing. Who needs to go to Key West or Chesapeake Bay when you have DM & MK?

Overview:

I went to Fish Bar a few days after if opened. As a big fan of DMK Burger Bar, I was excited to try Michael Kornick and David Morton's take on seafood. Overall, I was not disappointed.

The restaurant is small. I sat at the counter (which is the main seating area in the restaurant). There are two tables, but they are for groups of 4.

I was most impressed with the fresh ceviche of the day (mine was fluke). It came in a small mason jar, with some saltines. I thought the flavors were amazing. I could actually taste the fish, which was great. The acidity was perfect as well as the heat. I also had the lobster bisque, which is made without cream, and a lobster roll. The bisque was not too heavy, due to the lack of cream. It was very good, but had a bit too much corn. The lobster roll with celery mayo was excellent. As it was my first lobster roll I really have nothing to compare it to, but from what I've heard and read about lobster rolls it seemed pretty authentic.

The only disappointment I did have was with the oysters. I am a huge oyster fan and I was excited to finally get some at a place close to my house instead of having to trek all the way to Shaw's in River North. Needless to say, when I saw a plate of oysters come out, and the price tag associated with them, I was immediately turned off. In one order you only get six oysters. The oysters were small. The price was astronomical. Now I know it isn't oyster season, but come on. Six oyster for double digits. I know they can do better. The oyster po'boy was a better price.

I will go back when my craving for ceviche hits, its the perfect snack and better than any that I've tried so far.
