Description: HB website states: HB Home Bistro is a charming storefront restaurant with a proud proprietor cooking in the kitchen in the tradition of the charming French auberge. Or for Executive Chef Joncarl Lachman, who embraces his Dutch heritage, an "eetcafe" in Holland, described by the chef as, "an unpretentious, cozy and comfortable cafe." No matter how you classify it, HB Home Bistro is the quintessential neighborhood restaurant.

Lachman serves up classic bistro food that somehow feels familiar, whether you frequent French bistros or not. Honest, fresh flavors and locally-sourced products, combined with Lachman's generous and unpretentious approach, reminds one of nostalgic "grandma's" cooking. Portions are large and prices are low at this restaurant, and the addition of their BYO/no corkage policy makes this restaurant a favorite of Chicago diners.

Overview:

I want to clarify my recommendation on HB. I am usually hard pressed to find great choices in east lakeview, so my recommendation is based on its location, because it is one of the best choices in the area. The food is good, not great. There are several things we really liked, but others that fell short. It seems as though HB has the potential to be really good, if it just pushed a little farther and established its own style. Very cute space and very attentive staff. The chef was out and about helping and talking with tables. They have a great Weds special, $30 prix fixe for 3 courses of your choice from the menu. Add that to a BYOB policy and it's a great value.

Sorry had to change my rating. Last night, while still cute and personable, the food was really not right. Heirloom Tomato Salad covered in some sort of salami dressing just didnt work. And the special deconstructed lasanga left the overwhelming taste of nuts in our mouth. Something is off.
