"My Favorite Chicago Dining Experience Yet"

March 11, 2012

  • Food: American
  • Decor: Open, high ceiling
  • Service: Outstanding
  • Cost: $$$
  • Wine / Cocktails: Excellent

Overview:

I knew immediately upon entering the front door that we were in for an amazing experience and MK did not disappoint. First off, the room itself is incredible. We sat in the bar area - couldn't have been more perfect. MK got us started with a few adult beverages - my favorite being the "MK 10 Year Anniversary". I followed that up with a bowl of their Carrot Soup which was beyond outstanding.. up to and including the presentation. My only problem with this restaurant was that I couldn't decide which entree to order... they all sounded so good. So, I decided to leave it up to our server who seemed eager to take me up on the challenge. And again, I was blown away. I enjoyed the veal chop - all of it - down to the last bite... mixing in the occassional brussel sprout (as decadent as you can possibly make a green vegetable!). By this point, I admit it... I was FULL. But, how could I not partake in dessert? I can't remember the exact name of the dessert I chose, but I can tell you it had the word CHOCOLATE front and center and that's all I needed to see. Amazing. I even let my wife try a bite - which she'll be forever indebted to me for. Perhaps, my favorite part of the experience was the service. Our server and wait staff was perfect. Attentive. Fun. Knowledgable. All in all, this is my favorite meal in the past 1.5 years.

Recommended Dishes:

veal chop, salmon, brussels sprouts

"Another amazing dinner"

Overview:

MK has been a favorite if mine for years but for some reason I think last night was the best dinner ever! Had the bees's knees with gin and the TNT and both were excellent. Two people had the 10 year anniversary drink and raved about it.

We started with the grilled octopus which was cooked perfectly. I had the tuna which was amazing as always. At the table we also had the salmon with a really great sweet taste to it, the veal was very flavorful, and the lobster and whitefish was excellent. As a side dish we had the always popular pomme frites and the brussel sprouts. I love brussel sprouts but these were the best I have ever had. They had butter and truffle oil on them - enough said! Finished with my favorite - the cake and shake.

A thank you to Matt, Robby, and Trevor for the amazing service!!!!

"An effortless classic"

Overview:

God bless Michael Kornick for making Erick Williams the Executive Chef. He is the city's quiet genius, consistently putting out beautiful, imaginative, delicious food in a supremely comfortable, upscale environment. While you can't go wrong with any menu choice, we suggest ordering a round of truffle fries (or two) for the table as soon as you sit down. Other favorites: anything with lobster (the man has a way with this crustacean), the steak, and do not leave until you've had the Cake and Shake. The wine list is thoughtful and incredibly approachable; ask for a decanter. MK sets the standard for places that we love.

Recommended Dishes:

truffle fries, anything lobster, steak, cake and shake

"Still one of my favorites in Chicago"

January 6, 2011

  • Food: Classic american high end cuisine, made simple and delicious
  • Decor: modern, loft-like feel.
  • Service: impeccable without being too formal
  • Cost: $$$$
  • Wine / Cocktails: very thorough and well constructed, something for everyone and at all price levels

Overview:

I am a long time fan of MK and have been several times, each visit is delightful with amazing servics and food. I consistently place it in my top 10 restaurants in Chicago. We recently dined at MK for a holiday dinner with 8 of us. We were given a fantastic round table and treated like VIP's. The service for a large group was impeccable!

I started with the grilled octopus, one of my favorites. We were surprised from the kitchen with the quail appetizer as well. I wouldn't have chosen this myself, but it ended up being absolutely amazing, and one of the highlights of the meal for me.

My all time favorite entree here is the Veal Porterhouse, in which I indulged again. It is one of the most tender juicy pieces of meat you can imagine. I had a taste of the bison tenderloin as well, and it was awesome.

No meal would be complete at MK without a side of the pommes frites with Truffle Cream, trust!

We hadn't room for dessert, but in celebration of our holiday dinner, we forced ourselves. The cake and shake is usually my favorite, but I was also taken by the Banana dessert!

I must also say that the sommelier was fantastic and extremely helpful in our selection of wines. I have a fairly deep knowledge of wines and had already picked out what we were having, but changed our minds as a result of his recommendations. We were thrilled with the picks.

MK is consistently an amazing experience. I recommend it to almost anyone. It's great for a celebration, or just a night out. The menu is simple to understand, but when the food comes out it is anything but simple. This is a great example of a long standing restaurant where the motto "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" comes charging to my mind.

Recommended Dishes:

Octopus, Quail, Tuna, Veal Porterhouse, Bison, frites,
