"Great for Carnivores and Veggies alike"

October 14, 2011

  • special occasion
  • vegetarian
  • fine dining

  • Food: spicy fusion, high end
  • Decor: elegant and modern
  • Service: friendly - almost over the top, but was fine
  • Cost: $$$$
  • Wine / Cocktails: great wine list, unique flavor profile cocktails

Overview:

I bought an opentable coupon as I was sold on the fact that the chef was on the "Next Iron Chef" (they mentioned that in the email). We went and had a delicious meal - I love that they have a completely separate vegetarian menu to choose from, and the flavors are to die for. Both times I've ordered the vegetarian duo of cauliflower and eggplant. Flavors are great, and really spicy. If you don't like Indian flavors, you may not enjoy this place. I do think it's expensive for what you get, but is worth experiencing as the fusion of latin and indian flavors are truly unique. Also the appetizer plate was extremely expensive - $34 for only 3 small pieces of 4 things. We were charged 12 "extra" b/c we had 3 people, to put 4 more tiny pieces of food on the plate. I would not get that again. I might add that because we went with appetizers and the special dishes and wine, it was nearly 100/per person, with a coupon. A bit more than the $$$ rating in the review.

Overview:

So, I'll admit, I don't particularly like indian food. So, I've put off going to Vermilion for about 5 years. My partner bought a open table groupon that was about to expire this month, so rather than lose $25 we went on Friday. I am elated that we did!

From the moment we walked in we were treated with amazing service. Our server, Michael, was easily 50% of the reason we loved this place so much. He has been working at the restaurant since it opened, and knows the food and wine better than most servers that I have encountered in any restaurant. His recommendations on the food and wine were dead on.

We started with 3 apps, blue corn crusted scallops, artichoke pakoras and the mysore lamb chops. All amazing, but the lamb chops were sensational, the spices perfect. For dinner we chose the lobster portugese and caldeirada de peixe (a seafood stew). The stew was insane, the flavors some of the most intense and harmonious that I've experienced ever. I think there are some 15 different spices involved. I dont know what it was, but I'll take more please.

I wasnt surprised at all to learn that Chef Maneet Chauhan recently competed on Iron Chef against Morimoto. And from the winks I was getting, I wouldn't be surprised at all if she beat him.

A must try.
